「Art Apprciation Thread」

Despite having done art for a long time, I haven't really engaged that much with the arts, at least no to the degree of my peers. Sure I've watched cartoons, anime, read comics, looked at pictures, collected fan art, but I always felt disconnected from it. Even now, I can't really name the biggest influence on my art. I could say Akira Toriyama, but my work doesn't look like his.

So considering this, what I want to do is to try and build a greater appreciation for the craft of visual arts. I've starting with still images, paintings, illustrations, etc. Mainly stuff that is either public domain or creative commons. While this kind of stuff is well outside of my comfort zone, I think it will be necessary if I hope to expand my abilities as an artist.

I'm doing it here since this seems like a nice and comfy spot, and maybe someone will have some perspectives on the pieces I post here that did not occur to me.

I begin this thread with this picture, not only because it's funny to me, but I've also always been fond of this sort of line art. I really like the use of hatching to crate value, and the intricacies it brings to the table. While my line work is far simpler, I do often use hatching myself when doing doodles.

I think you're overthinking it. You shouldn't force yourself to "build a greater appreciation" it should just

I hear what you are saying there, but I do not believe the ability I am looking for will just come to me. I've spent a long time just hoping it would come to me, but it never did. I don't think being proactive here will hurt.

Excuse me, I forgot about the live posting again.
Besides, this kind of thread lets me share all the neat free/public domain stuff floating around online, which there

what you typed was still available on the site though. Like, even if I was to stop typing right now and walk away, this box would still float around until autosubmitted

I feel like if you don't know who has influenced your art you must not actually have developed your art that much. Studying other artists has got to have come up in your art journey at some point, if you have been making art for a long time as you say.

You're not too far off.
I've been going back to the core basics of draftsmanship to try and get back in to refining my work. For a while I had all but quit the practice, so there are a good deal of things that I've lost touch with, my inspirations being one of them. But even considering that, I never really had the vast visual library the my contemporaries had, and I was always relatively disconnected from the art world. I hope to change that.

I could never really get into visual arts as opposed to music. I think there's something fundamentally different between those two. I know abstract art exists but I think most of the drawings/paintings are the interpretations of real world things, we see something and then we try to filter it through our brains/imagination and output our own versions of it. Music on the other hand is not interpreting anything obvious. Well, sounds exist in nature but they are not organized, they are very chaotic and unpredictable so they need to be arranged in certain patterns. Whereas if you paint, you have much more material in nature to just look at and imitate. Maybe we started music by trying to imitate birds, in that case our interpretation of bird songs has deviated so much that we don't think of birds when we hear human music. On the other hand, if you see a painting you will most likely recognize what it's trying to depict from the real world. Maybe music is interpretation of something but we don't fully have access to it so we can't know what it is. Visual art that I like is mostly abstract, like abstract grafitti or geometric shapes.

I could rarely click with abstract art. I'm not sure why, but I could not parse it at all, I kept looking for representation even in pieces where I knew there was none. It bothered me a bit because I didn't have any hate for the abstract>

One area where the abstract did click with me are fractal images. Where I often found myself confused with abstract paintings, fractal art captivated me, especially 3D fractals. I've been toying with fractal art myself even.

As soon as I laid my eyes on this stuff, it hit me in my soft bits. I really loved classic cartooning and children's book fair, and this stuff combines it in a strong way.
The artist's name if William Wallace Denslow.
