The Stripping of the A

ive been reading conversations with friends by Sally Rooney, im near the end now. it's the sort of book where I could tell in the first 50 pages i wouldn't get anything out of it but the prose is so compelling that I've had to finish it. the main theme of the book is helplessness, all the characters are products of their environments and do what they have to not rock the boat. you can compare this to the neoliberal concept of the end of history: everything is the way it is now forever and we're powerless to stop it. the author is a marxist and she articulatess well how young people feel helpless nowadays

anyway yeah I definitely could tell I'd hate every character in the book. they all seem horrifically insufferable, i haven't quite finished the book yet but it seems like Bobbi is supposed to be the REAL marxist (in touch with people etc) despite not doing any organising and Frances is the fake one who only pays lip service to theory. i could see the book being good as a very light introduction in to how young people feel nowadays but it's not a book I'm going to be thinking about in a week's time
