Welcome to the future!

ai is really disturbing, for sure. what a time to be alive

With the current state of ai tech I'm not so much worried about le evil robot uprising as I am about humans abusing the tech to screw over other people... artists didn't give permission for dall-e to be trained on their work, and now it's putting their jobs and the entire field of art into jeopardy.....

i'm glad ai exists. that people have to toil to make a living is unfortunate. an enormous waste as long as we are mortal. hopefully one day ai will put all of that behind us. and for now it's just neat and makes producing artwork for my projects easier. ai is the best.

maybe, but many things that improve our lives can also make them worse. we can't let the potential for misuse dissuade us from striving toward a brighter tomorrow.

understandable, but think of how it has been used for good too. i don't think it's a coincidence that the recent advancements in lgbt rights occured when they had. the internet connected queer people together. connected loners who have never met anyone like them before. helped them learn from one another. help each other. act in unison when the circumstances required it. i think that's worth a lot, and that some variation of this holds for most groups of people who stand apart from the majority, either out of choice or by the hand of fate.

it will be rough, huge changes always are, but imo it will be a net good. take ai art. artists are not just their hands. first and foremost, they are their minds. honed by endless practice. they know what works and what doesn't. that is not true for most prompt writers. an artist can incorporate an image synthesizer into their workflow to produce things they couldn't make before due to the amount of work such projects would require. and of course, without the artist's eye, most people won't be able to produce something similar. only those who are just their hands do not benefit.

now.. will laypeople be able to make things they couldn't before? absolutely, and i think that's a good thing. empowering people to do more by themselves is a good thing. it's part of what civilization is all about. we no longer have to toil nearly as hard in order to survive, growing our own food and what not, and so we are able to spend our time in other ways. this is the same principle applied to images. in many cases the work itself won't be the image but what is done with it. lowering the financial barrier of entry to many fields by freeing people from the need to commission artwork is a good thing, and we only question that because we live in a system where we must earn money for our work or suffer greatly. maybe even die. that is the problem. the economic context in which this technology was brought into being, not the technology itself. in a post-scarcity society there would be no reason to do anything but celebrate it. unfortunately, and once again, the true evil is work-or-starve capitalism.

but this is all awfully easy for me to say, isn't it? i'm not at risk of losing my livelihood while many artists are. many artists will. so i can't blame them, or you, for opposing and hating the thing through which they will be made to suffer. i just think it's important to look not to the scourge but to the hand. and remember that the tool by itself is good. that we ultimately all want everyone to be able to get what they want as easily as possible, as long as it harms no one directly. and it is the hand that whips and takes and wrangles, and it is the hand we ought change.

what doesn't scare me about AI now is what it can do now, but rather the direction it's going and how powerful AI will soon be (it seems)

tempted to start chatting on here about how I'm going towards working in AI alignment.
maybe it'd be interesting

the super tldr; is "Yeah it's scary as hell, but if things are going to end badly, I'd at least like to feel that I tried my best to make things better."
