i didnt realize how important visible filenames were until now. seems like a good idea to implement that ^^;

we had them but i decided to get rid of them

hmmm
Anonymous## opworm
i'll try something
Anonymous## opworm
all of this is mainly due to a firefox vs. chrome issue unfortunately...
Anonymous## opworm
firefox is really bad at supporting modern web standards
Anonymous## opworm
what browser do you use?
Anonymous## opworm
ok hang on
Anonymous## opworm
ok i added partial file info
Anonymous## opworm
i'll tweak the whitespace a bit
Anonymous## opworm
i decided filenames are kind of an eye sore, but i think having the other file info is good
Anonymous## opworm
all file metadata will be included

ohhh lemme see
Anonymous
ohhh, much better! is there a way to have a partial filename that's way shorter (like, doesn't extend the post) but where the full name shows up if you hover for a few seconds
>>95104
Anonymous## opworm
i'll adjust the color of the time and name too
Anonymous## opworm
but yeah, hopefully this is fine
Anonymous## opworm
>>95101
yes, we already do have that kind of abbreviating, but basically a statistical analysis (by just sampling a bunch of filenames on 4chan and here) showed that more than half are typically random IDs/gibberish and just provide no valuable info, and most of the rest provide totally redundant or obvious info, while taking up vertical space and adding line noise and distraction. so i want to try to eliminate them entirely

i decided to do it after using some well-designed 4chan mobile apps and noticing none of them showed filenames and everything seemed slicker and i then connected the dots. for video/audio i can see how there's more value in it than for images but yeah, i'm not sure

i guess the vertical whitespace is already being taken up for video/audio due to the rest of the file info
>>95105
Anonymous## opworm
>>95105
yeah my team and i debated this a lot, basically deciding if filename jokes warranted us retaining them. we basically found they were too few and far between to justify it
Anonymous## opworm
>>95105
yeah it's the title from the video metadata, not the filename
>>95109
Anonymous## opworm
like just to show you what it would look like if we did show filenames:
Anonymous## opworm
#theme { display: initial !important; }
Anonymous## opworm
you can see them on the videos now
Anonymous## opworm
i'm not sure what value they add here... especially for the ones that already have title metadata
Anonymous
that i can understand, yeah. what about a grey symbol or something you can roll the cursor over to reveal the filename? for now it could just be like (fn) or (filename)
Anonymous## opworm
hmm, yeah that's probably a good idea
Anonymous## opworm
i can add something like that
Anonymous
ohhhh i could try and make a little icon for that! somethig-
yuh yuh
Anonymous## opworm
i'm thinking no icon is necessary
Anonymous## opworm
the vertical space is already taken up by at the very least the file length, so i can just make it so hovering anywhere to the right of that can just show the filename
Anonymous## opworm
i'm trying to keep the design of everything pretty minimalistic, including avoiding icons unless necessary
Anonymous
oh i just came up with another solution! the autoplay when you roll over a video is actually kinda annoying imo - what if you had to click to do that, but rolling over the preview reveals the full filename after a second?
Anonymous
filenames could be completely ignoreable then, and take up no space unless you seek them out. >>95122 oh good
Anonymous## opworm
in the settings you can disable hover-to-play
>>95121
Anonymous## opworm
i'd like to leave that on by default, though. and in fact in the next update i'm going to make it so audio autoplays too. imo the video/audio autoplay is useful for a lot of people
>>95125
Anonymous
>>95124
good to know its an option! thank you~
>>95123
yuh that would make it more useful. at this point it's down to personal preference imo, it's cool seeing a website come together around only one or a few people's sensibilities, rather than being constantly edited by committee or w/e
Anonymous## opworm
yeah, i mostly just make it based on my personal taste
