imo the issue here is with capitalism rather than with the system per se. like, automation routinely replaces other sorts of workers, and we generally welcome it. i would never blame a person for being in their own corner, for opposing the forces that seek to take their work, but taking a step back i think that people usually accept that this is the way of things. in this case the nonconsensual use of training material is a legitimate issue to take, but honestly even if we like accept that it's still a matter of time until companies source enough legally obtained material to get back to where they currently are. the corporations certainly own enough intellectual property between them. and what then? people will still lose work. i think that the real problem is that we live in a world where we work or starve.

i think it really sucks that people have to spend so much of their time doing things they don't want to do. fixing that is good. so i agree with the liberation angle. but as is it still means people losing their jobs. as for artwork.. like, being serious for a moment, time is still a limited commodity. it's not always easy to find enough people who are sufficiently motivated to work on a certain project even if they're not strapped for time or cash. image synthesizers (i won't call them ai artists) can help with that. help empower individuals to make things without having to rely so heavily on the labor from others. or maybe i just say that because i'm nervous and kind of antisocial lol. i like people but i often struggle to get along with them..

there are people who somehow manage to do nearly everything by themselves. i'm not that much of a virtuoso though. and for large projects it can be hard to ever make enough material, or to otherwise find a way to convince lots of other people to follow you when you're not especially charismatic. but i do understand your concerns. one of my favor pieces of art is.. brb searching wikipedia... okay i actually shouldn't share that without a trigger warning. some pretty fucked up stuff happened there. but tl;dr an artist sort of stood there and just let people do whatever to her while she silently endured their treatment for hours. a machine could never replicate this because the whole point of it is the performer's humanity and the direct relationship of the audience with it. even if you built a robot that perfectly copied her it wouldn't be able to achieve this goal. so like.. i get what you mean when you say the point of art is the hardship. is the imperfect humanity of the creator. their experience of the process. sometimes, though, art is made of non-art. sometimes you don't need art but just a picture, so you can make art with it. and that is where i find myself. i think that here image synthesizers could be useful, and would not and could not step on the toes of life-infused art proper

the trick is to not be a perfectionist and just take what you can make for what it is
